I wrote this song after the title of the late, great Maya Angelou’s book I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I was at a place in my life where I didn’t fit in with people who were supposed to embrace me and that rejection made me question some of the most fundamental beliefs I had held in my heart. It was a time that really shook me, and when I got through, it was with the type of conviction that you can only have if you’ve been tested. I like to think the caged bird had that conviction too.
